Profile

Derek Ogg was appointed Crown Counsel in 2007 at Senior level. He was further promoted to the second most senior post as Assistant Principal Advocate Depute in 2009. Additionally he was appointed as Head of National Sexual Crimes Unit, a groundbreaking new High Court prosecution Division in Crown Office made up of 9 senior prosecutors and 2 senior indicters tasked with marking, investigating and prosecuting all serious and sensitive sex related crime in the High Court. He also conducted serious and sensitive conviction Appeals before the Court of Criminal Appeal and the Supreme Court for the Crown. Since leaving Crown Office in 2011 he has been heavily instructed as defence counsel in the most serious of cases.

1992 - 1997 Standing Junior counsel to Scottish Office Education Dept.
Leading counsel for Director of Social Work in Orkney Child Sex Abuse Enquiry. This 9 month long Enquiry under Lord Clyde led to sweeping reforms in child care law and child abuse investigation
First Scottish Counsel ever to appear (as Silk) at the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the case which came to notoriety as the 'Chokar Case'. ( Montgomery and Coulter v HMA)
Member of the Faculty's Finance and Staffing Committee.
2004 - 2006 Chairman of Faculty of Advocates Criminal Bar Association.
Appointed Senior Advocate Depute, Crown Office prosecuting High Court crimes including murder and rape. Duties also included appearing in Court of Criminal Appeal leading in sensitive conviction appeals.
2009 Promoted to Assistant Principal Advocate Depute at Crown Office, in addition appointed Head, National Sexual Crimes Unit, a newly formed prosecution Unit which specialises in all manner of sex related crime. Includes managing a 9 strong team of specialist High Court prosecutors and two dedicated indicters.
