Road trips will never be the same again with the iconic 1962 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van. This authentic camper van is a replica of the classic Volkswagen Camper Van from 1962. Every iconic feature is here! On the outside, the terrific detailing includes 'V' shape three-way color split at the front, rounded roof and window frames, opening 'splittie' safari windshield, opening doors, iconic pop-up roof with textile curtain surround, roof rack, rear side air intake vents and lots more! The detailing is equally impressive on the inside, from the authentic VW air-cooled flat four cylinder 'boxer' engine, front cabin bench seat, gear stick, angled dashboard and iconic spherical speedometer, to custom LEGO features like folding rear bench seat, folding dinette table, closet with mirror and even a painting! Ages 16+. 1334 pieces.
I purchased the retro VW camper van for my eleven year old grandson who loves all things camping vehicles as well as Legos. There are over 1300 pieces and the age range states 16+ but as he is meticulous at following the directions I thought he could handle it. He said it was "by far the hardest one yet," however he completed it in a few days with marvelous results. And, unlike many of the small sets, the camper van is very large with intricate detailing. I have attached a photo of the result.
I continue to be amazed by the amazing engineering that goes into turning small little brics into a 4 pound object de art. Incredibly detailed, fun, amazingly designed, super fun and funky. Did have one missing piece - a black 1 x 2 that goes on the front passenger door - but I scarfed one from my Millennium Falcon (next build) and just received replacements (free and quickly) from LEGO who are great about this stuff. Built over four sessions (give or take)...maybe 16 hours? Detailed engine. Folding table and bench seats. Kitchen/sink. Closet with mirror. Hippie art. Therapy in a box. Makes the cares of the world go away and finishing it...there's still something amazing about finishing your LEGO. Millennium Falcon is next...followed by the dreaded Tower Bridge and Sydney Opera House. I've pretty much got my next year plotted out. Thank you LEGO. Miracle in a box...and cheaper than going to the shrink.
Note that this is rated for "Experts" and I did not know what that meant when I bought this for my 11 year old son. Expert means it comes with directions but the pieces are not sorted into bags that are numbered in the order they would be used. So you get several bags with the 1,300 + pieces and you have to search through every bag to find the pieces in the instructions. It seems kind of daunting at first, but if you separate the pieces into different piles by color that will help immensely. This is a very nice looking model and a nice conversation starter.
Other than this set being very expensive as any other Lego is, it's great. I bought it for my son as his birthday present. My son turned 21 and some may think be too old for LEGO. He has been a fan of LEGO since he was young. This camper set is 16+ on difficulty and only took my son 2 days to put together. He enjoyed it while putting it together. I hoped it would take him a little longer but he is done and the finished product looks amazing just like the picture on the box. Now he is dreaming of putting together a race car which is more pieces and more complex. That might be his winter break present... This set came with two books of directions, which were very clear as any other LEGO, all parts in plastic bags. Quality set for higher price. If you or a family member like to build LEGO sets, this set will not disappoint.
So much fun! I'm an adult LEGO collector and this is one of the most enjoyable sets I've experienced (second only to the original Arkham Asylum). So much detail and such intricate components to recreate a truly iconic vehicle of the era. The engine is just amazing. The roof vent with a fabric curtain, the closet with a reflecting mirror, the tiny shelves on the door, the lava lamp, and (my favorite part) the seat that collapses into a bed. The only downside is the fragility of the roof structure. If you're showing off your new structure to your friends, the roof could start shedding parts when you try to take it off, much to your chagrin. *ack* Also, as an aside, Hippie Lego minifigure pairs perfectly with this set. :)
This is a great build and I enjoyed it very much. Please LEGO dont start slippimg on having such a great product. This shipped from Amazon on time. The product had some missing pieces and I feel the quality is getting worse. I am not totaly discouraged and will continue to build.
It was fun and I'm 11, it wasn't to hard, it was detailed and the directions were clear.
